Today I remembered water. While in the grocery store, I was excited to see a hemp milk drink. I reached out and grabbed it, then remembered awareness I've gathered about water.
Some watersheds, and many beings within them, have been affected by a drink manufacturing corporation (most likely more than one) who is sucking dry their nourishment/irrigation supplies. Local water sources are being drained by drink manufacturers, and the water is being transported by petroleum to other places.
Also large agro-business corporations are doing the same transporting away, in the form of produce, local water to far away places using petroleum.
I looked at the first ingredient of the hemp "milk", and it was purified or distilled water. The hemp milk was not manufactured in my local watershed.
I decided not to buy the product. I looked around the store at juices, canned soups, frozen produce, and realized that most of these items contain water from somewhere else. This is affecting local watersheds and it's inhabitants, depending on the amount as well as the extent of the processing of the items, by mainly dehydrating the area, obviously, as well as often polluting the remaining "waste" water.
I'm aware that the water never leaves the Earth in any noticeable amount. I understand that this is the same water that dinosaurs lapped up, the first trees soaked up, and the first cells swam in. I also know that plants and other beings filter and clean the water in an endless cycle. I am aware though that the manipulation, transportation, and polluting of it is rapidly causing less and less of it to be immediately useable for many of us in Earth.
I realized that choosing local products has a greater effect than I previously understood, and I've decided to buy a higher percentage of dry goods than I previously have.
Big learning, and I still know only a small percentage of what goes on in this water planet.

When I was in Mexico, the people there were out of water, they had none. Zero- zip. And do you know how large Mexico City is? There are so many people. Where is their water coming from?
ReplyDeleteI just spoke with a friend in Augacatitla who says it is now cheaper for Mexican citizens to buy coca cola (who took a lot of mexicos water for their soft drinks) than it is for them to buy water. Where do we go from here? Bless your water. Thank our aquifer dearly.
I hope you decide to do some blogging. I'd love to read more!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments. I'm a slow beginner obviously!
